The treatment objective is to assist traumatized refugees to master their lives in exile, thereby bettering their life in Denmark. This simultaneously forms a basis for better integration in Danish society.
The treatment is interdisciplinary and includes psychotherapy, medical examination, physiotherapy, tension relief treatment, social coordination and guidance counseling, and, if necessary, psychiatric consultation. Furthermore, the majority of the treatments take place by the assistance of an interpreter.
Objectives for the psychotherapeutic work are, among others:
To help the client distance the horrors of the past and learn to focus on current life.
To aid the client towards general alleviation of psychological symptoms.
To help the client improve emotional, cognitive, physical and social levels of functioning.
The social work involves, among other things:
To help the clients establish a safe and secure framework around their life.
To help the clients start an active life in Denmark, to the extent they can psychologically and physically manage.
Consulting and supervision for professionals.
The doctor's task is, among other things:
To perform a general health examination of the client.
If necessary, to refer the client for pertinent somatic treatment.
OASIS' physiotherapist and psycho-motor therapist contribute towards:
Treatment of non-specific aches and pains
Treatment of injuries to tendons, muscles and joints as a result of war and torture
Helping clients achieve a better relationship to their most often abused bodies through heightened body awareness.
If a client is deemed to have a psychiatric problem or is suffering from strong symptoms or effects of PTSD, the client may be referred to our psychiatric consultant in regard to possible medication.
Child and family treatment is a special task which often involves several therapists and entails closer cooperation wth the family's professional network. The treatment may consist of individual talks or play therapy with the child/children, supplemented by talk sessions with the parents, as well as family therapy, child psychological examinations, supervision of the professional network, and more.
OASIS offers training of professionals within the social and health sectors in both Denmark and abroad in different aspects of work with traumatized refugees.
